Hiring Home Service Workers in the Philippines (Part 2): IDs, Health Checks, Salary, and Legal Duties

Following the last article, today we’ll look at what you should be careful about when hiring home-service workers such as housemaids, nannies, gardeners, and others in the Philippines.


1️⃣ Identification Is Essential

When hiring, verifying the applicant’s identity is a must.

You should check and keep copies of:

These documents should be kept together with the applicant’s resume or personal file.


2️⃣ Medical History and Health Checks Matter

You should also check the medical history of the applicant.

If you support basic medical tests such as:

  • Blood tests

  • Chest X-ray

The employee can visit a hospital, receive the test results, and submit them to you.

I once heard an episode from someone I know:
She hired a babysitter when her child was still a baby. Unfortunately, the child later required long-term treatment after contracting tuberculosis (TB) from the babysitter.

For the health of the entire family, this step is strongly recommended.


3️⃣ Stay-In vs Stay-Out Must Be Clear


When you decide to hire and write a contract, clearly specify:

  • Whether the worker is stay-in or stay-out

  • What you provide for free (accommodation, food, daily necessities, etc.)

If the worker is stay-in, you must guarantee at least 8 hours of rest per day.


4️⃣ Salary, Minimum Wage, and 13th Month Pay


The minimum wage for home-service workers has been set by law.

In the contract, clearly write:

  • Basic salary

  • Additional expenses you provide (food, daily necessities, etc.)

It is recommended to list these separately, because employees who work for more than one year are entitled to 13th month pay.


5️⃣ Mandatory Benefits Under the KASAMBAHAY Law

Employees who have worked for more than one month must be registered for:

Contribution amounts vary depending on salary, so make sure to check first.

If these contributions are included in the employee’s salary, this must be clearly stated in the contract.
Any additional benefits should also be written down.
